Project description:
The Thank Uke for Caring Fund is a charitable initiative
created to bring the joy, creativity, and wellness
benefits of music to frontline healthcare workers, especially in assisted living and memory care facilities.
This fund was established in memory of Norma M. Wilkerson who taught ukelele in Oregon and Alaska to enhance her retirement. She encouraged people who were told that they were not musical or talented to give it a try and their lives were changed, finding the ukelele fun to learn. Her performances always involved costumes, audience participation, humor and love. She would hope that anyone with a ukelele find others to play with and to perform imperfectly at every opportunity as “there are no wrong notes when you are having fun!”
The Thank Uke for Caring Fund gives recipients a quality ukelele and starter kit with help to learn to play – no experience necessary. The fund also encourages employers and care communities to welcome appropriate ukulele playing in public and shared spaces for the enjoyment of staff, residents, patients, and visitors.
